Construction and Parking UpdateOver the next several years, the Kansas Capitol is undergoing a major renovation. Please be aware of the changes in and around the capitol grounds. These changes are necessary to ensure access and safety for everyone. This renovation will preserve the building for future generations. We appreciate your patience during this time. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us. Please note that many features of the capitol, such as the John Steuart Curry murals, must be protected during construction and may not be visible during your visit. Changes to the access of the Kansas State Capitol 1) Public access is limited to the east side (Jackson Street, one way street heading north), ground level, behind the stairs. Do not go up the stairs to enter, there is no access through those doors. 2) Parking on and around the Capitol grounds is limited to authorized permit holders. All other vehicles, including buses, are not allowed. 3) There is an underground parking lot that can be entered on 8th Street on the North side of the Capitol (corner of 8th and Harrison). You may park there for two hours for free. 4) You may also park on the street (Jackson is recommended –one way street heading north- closest to the Public Entrance). You may park for up to 10 hours at a time on Jackson between 8th and 9th Street – meters cost approximately 45 cents per hour. Street parking is free on Saturday and Sunday. 5) Please view the attached Capitol Parking Map. This indicates where buses may park. It also shows the free four- hour parking area in the visitor lot that is to the South of the Capitol in the Judicial Center parking lot. 6) Please communicate with the adult chaperones about where to pick up your group. Groups may exit through the west or east side doors, but may only enter on the east side. There is no entering or exiting on the south or north sides of the Capitol.
